We are learning about statistics

We are data detectives: Statistics is about collecting data and gathering all of the information that you need. There needs to be a purpose for your data collection. We gather data for a particular need. For example, we might do an investigation about our favourite colours if we were going to buy each person a t-shirt or make them a card. You can use open or closed questions to gather data. You can present your data in a graph. For example: Tally chart Scatter plot Line graph Stem and leaf graph Bar graph  Pictograph A bar graph has: A title  Bars (even widths)  An x and y axis The y axis has numbers on it that are evenly spaced Labels on the x and y axis Once we have presented the data - we can make statistical statements by analysing it.

We are Statisticians

We have learned that part of statistics is graphs. We have been collecting information about people's languages. We have been using the NZ Census data to figure out "Who is Jasmine Jones?" Bar graphs represent something about people. We collect information (data) to add to our bar graphs. We learned that graphs have a y axis (up to the sky) and an x axis (along the ground). Stem and leaf graphs hold place value for data that is big (tens and ones). Statistics is easy to understand when you can read it on a graph. There are many different ways to represent our data.
